Davide Benati was born in Reggio Emilia on 23 February 1949. He attended the Liceo artistico in Modena and then the Brera Academy in Milan and Bologna, where he held the chairs of anatomy and painting.
His debut solo exhibition was in 1972 at the Galleria II Giorno in Milan;
His exhibition curriculum, which was already significant in the 1970s, intense years of research and experimentation, was enriched in the 1980s with personal exhibitions and participation in group exhibitions of particular importance and prestige, including international ones; in 1982 he was invited to the Venice Biennale, where he returned in 1990 with a personal room; in 1986 he was invited to the Quadriennale in Rome;
Public anthological exhibitions dedicated to him were held in 1989 at the Galleria Civica di Modena (with an essay in the catalogue by Antonio Tabucchi) and in 1992 at the Musei Civici di Reggio Emilia (with an essay in the catalogue by Luciano Caramel).
The list of participations in important group exhibitions is also significant ("Anni Ottanta" in Bologna and the 3rd International Triennial at the Kunsthalle in Nuremberg in 1985, "Dopo il concettuale" in Trento, "Itinerari di arte contemporanea" in Lisbon in 1986, Biennale Internazionale de II Cairo in 1995),
and solo exhibitions in private galleries in Italy and abroad (Antwerp, Stockholm, Hamburg, Zurich, Paris, New York).
His works are present in the collections of Banca Intesa S. Paolo - Gallerie D'Italia in Milan .
From 2005 to 2015 he worked with the Marlborough Gallery in the Monte Carlo office .
In 2018, he returned to exhibit in Milan at the Luca Tommasi Arte Contemporanea Gallery; and La Biennale del Disegno in Rimini, dedicated a large exhibition hall to him "Arpabirmana" curated by Alessandra Bigi Iotti .
