Dylan Martinez’s hyperrealistic glass sculptures employ light and space to investigate human pereption. Best known for his trompe l'oeil works comprising bags of water made from molten glass, he forces viewers to investigate what is reality or illusion. Trained in traditional glassblowing techniques, he manipulates glass to discover new modes of perspective and create a new experience of looking at the world, as in Water Bag #A30 (2021). His installations like Inverted Logic 2 (2019), made from camera lens, vinyl, and glass, create a perplexing environment that’s always in motion depending on where the viewer sees the work. After receiving his MFA from Ball State University, he studied with master craftsmen including at a residency with Venetian glass craftsmen in Murano, Italy. His work has been featured in numerous publications including American Craft Magazine and Aesthetica Magazine.
