Johannes Mundinger studied design, illustration, and painting in the Westphalian city of Münster and in Brussels. He became well-known for his monumental murals in public spaces, both domestically and internationally. In the Köppe Gallery, the now Berlin-based artist exhibits not only paintings but also painted wooden segments and paintings on glass. His works oscillate between the stylization of reality and the exploration of perspective and space, without Mundinger ever becoming concretely realistic. Mundinger's painting focuses on the impact of colors and forms, which create suggestions and evoke thoughts of architectural, landscape, or organically moving elements. Gesturally abstract and never concretely representational, many of the artist's pictures evoke the impression of looking through a window, for example, onto a sea surface over which color patterns pulsate like drifting clouds. Such associations, however, never achieve certainty. Mundinger's art is free from a set concept, writes art historian Christiane Meixner in the Tagesspiegel (21.05.2022) about the artist: “His art is a play with formal elements. It is improvised and developed in the painting process [...]. Mundinger does not have a concept at hand but allows himself to be guided by his painting. He responds in the process." Nevertheless, the impression of a constant in the artist's work emerges – the view or the window. This theme has a long history in art, not only as a symbol of the separation between inside and outside but above all between reality and illusion.
