Grimm grew up in Oranienburg, East Germany. From 1974 to 1980, she studied German philology at the Humboldt University in Berlin, she then started attending evening classes at the Academy of Fine Arts Berlin. This paved her way into art. Kerstin Grimm creates drawings, sculptures and collages. Her large-format collages are composed of multiple layers of painted paper partially covered with transparent sheets. Her works are often developed as series such as Kinderspiele (Children’s Games). They show hybrid creatures and fairy-tale characters in surreal landscapes. In 2010, Kerstin Grimm was a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and in 2011 a sculpture docent at the Berlin Weißensee School of Art.
