Otto Nebel was born in Berlin. He became a bricklayer and later a master of construction. He later took acting lessons. During a front holiday in 1916 he looked at the Franz Marc exhibition at the gallery "Der Sturm", which moved him to turn to the arts.
From 1919 he worked in his hometown as a painter and writer, where he became acquainted with the circle around Herwarth Walden, one of the main promoters of German avant-garde and husband of Else Lasker-Schüler.
In 1933 he emigrated to Switzerland, where he first settled in Muntelier and later in Berne. During a stay in Italy 1937/38 the picturesque Epic series work Mustaraya was born.
