Pedro Vaz´s artistic practice, mostly resulting in painting and video-installations, is based on a research about landscape. He develops projects in which he tries to keep the awareness that landscape, as represented in art, is but a construction dependent on humankind’s perception of itself as separated from nature. For his research, the contact to real place is fundamental and therefore he makes use of journeys and solitary expeditions, in an approach he defines as lived landscape. Wild and empty landscapes are the most adequate sites for his inquiry. Some of the most recent include Amazonas, in Brazil, or Superstition Mountains, in the USA. He has a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (2006). His artistic work focuses on research into nature and landscape using mainly painting, video and installation. Personal contact with the site is central to his practice and projects often include a field visit. Previous projects have included locations such as the Amazon (Br.), Tour du Mont Blanc (Fr. It. Ch.) or Superstition Mountains (USA). He has worked on projects with Galeria 111, Lisbon, Kubikgallery, Porto, Galeria Baró or Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo. Throughout 2019 and 2020, he completed a pedestrian crossing of the Great Transpyrenean Route – GR11, from the Cantabrian Sea (Cape Higuer) to the Mediterranean Sea (Cape de Creus), in two blocks of 23 days each. This project was exhibited at the solo exhibition “Num Único Acorde” at the Caja de Burgos Contemporary Art Center – CAB (October 2021).
Recent individual exhibitions: Cabana, Sesc Itaquera, São Paulo, Terra Firme, Colégio das Artes, Coimbra (2018), Azimute, 111 Gallery, Lisbon (2018); Superstition Wilderness, Camões – Portuguese Cultural Center, Luxembourg (2018); Peralta to Boulder Canyon, Phoenix Institute of Contemporary Art, Phoenix, EUA (2017); Trilha do Facão, Kubikgallery, Porto, Portugal (2017).
