Deborah Kaufman works with acrylic paint in a style that is abstract/expressionist. Her paintings evolve through the process of applying and removing layers of paint to build rich and complex areas of color. Emerging forms and shapes interact, leading to a satisfying tension and energy. The movement through and around the surface suggests an inner journey; lines and marks evoke energy and the idea of new possibility. Shapes hover on or move off of the edge, a reminder to think larger, to see beyond the obvious. The subject matter is the event happening on the surface of the canvas. Born in Washington, D.C., Deborah has lived in New Hampshire for many years. While growing up, she was surrounded by the artwork of her mother, the abstract painter Martha Lloyd. She was also exposed to and influenced by the works of the abstract expressionist painters of the 1940’s-1950’s. Deborah’s artwork is well-known in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire and surrounding areas. She was a member of the Murphy Arts Gallery in Keene, has exhibited with the Windham Art Gallery in Brattleboro, Vermont, and was represented by the Redmond Bennet Gallery in Dublin, New Hampshire. Deborah was one of the artists chosen for the 2012 Summer Artists Series at the Rocky Neck Gallery in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and also invited to be part of the “Expressive Painting 2013” exhibit at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center. She was an art educator in the Keene Public Schools for over 24 years as well as an adjunct faculty member at Keene State College and Antioch-New England Graduate School for 10 years. Deborah is a 2015 Ruth and James Ewing Arts Awards recipient.
