Graduate in Visual and Plastic Arts at the National School of Fine Arts Institute (Montevideo) and Master in installation and graphic techniques at the Kask & Conservatorium (Ghent). She is the youngest artist to exhibit individually at the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo. She has won several awards, scholarships and residences in Uruguay, Brazil, USA, Mexico, Belgium or Spain.
Elián’s work revolves around the relationship between memory, migration and history, and the imbrication of this elements with both persona and colective matters. She combines traditional techiques and art forms with new materials and installations as a way of materializing her point of view on history. She uses etching as a metaphor of the action of remembering obsesive details that turn fundamental and buid new universes, with the only aim of understanding where she comes from and where she aspires to go to.
The project she presents at the fair, trough methacrylates, photos and drawings, goes over the ordinary in the midst of turbulent periods in twentieth-century Europe. Each piece brings into play the relationship of the individual with the collective, allowing the viewer to recognize himself, regardless of the particular historical context, in that which may be called “human”.
My artistic practice delves around the relation between memory, migration and history. How History it is a Man´s construction made from choices. How migration is inherent in the concept of humanity. And how memory exists in order to be able to relate to each other as human beings.
