The original letters in Erte’s Alphabet Suite were created in gouache on paper consisting of exotic female human bodies in styled, sexy, costumes and embellishments, contorting themselves as if performing a dance, into the shapes of the letters. The idea was conceived in 1924, created between 1927 and 1967, and the suite was published in graphics in 1976-1977. The masterpiece “Erte’s Alphabet” paintings are on permanent display at the Centre Pompidou Museum in Paris.

Romain de Tirtoff (23 November 1892 – 21 April 1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer known by the pseudonym Erté, from the French pronunciation of his initials RT (pronounced: [ɛʁ.te]). He was a diversely talented 20th-century artist and designer who flourished in an array of fields, including fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theater, opera, and interior decor.
