Hermann Lederle, (b. 1958, West Germany) “Colorweaves Unikat No. 41” (2017) Limited-edition of one serigraph on Somerset Velvet paper; one-of-a-kind artwork (‘unikat’ is German for ‘unique’.)   The unframed sheet is 24 x 24 inches (61 x 61 cm) and is hand signed and dated in the lower left margin by the artist, titled “Unikat” in the lower center margin, and hand signed in the lower right margin by the master printer, Hans-Peter Haas.  Haas and Lederle have collaborated over four years to create prints, and the ‘Colorweaves’ serigraphs each feature a unique color scheme and variation, making each example an original work of art.  (There are also open edition giclee prints of some of Lederle’s serigraphic images, but the piece offered here is the unique piece produced by these two artists in 2017.)

Hermann Lederle is a German-born, critically admired artist currently living and working in Los Angeles.  .  He studied in Germany and received a formal fine arts education at the San Francisco Art Institute.  Lederle’s work has been widely exhibited in the United States in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Germany, Canada, Hungary, and France.  Examples of his work are also found in the private collections of Ringo Starr, Eric Stolz, Cal Zecca, Gabor Csupo.

Hermann Lederle is a critically admired artist currently living and working in Los Angeles.  He studied in Germany and received a formal fine arts education at the San Francisco Art Institute.  His work has been widely exhibited in prominent galleries in the U.S. and Europe and may be found in the private collections of notables including Ringo Starr and Eric Stolz, Cal Zecca, Gabor Csupo.

Lederle’s artistic process begins with an initial grid-like foundation.  On that, he layers an image, perhaps fish, birds, or human faces. The oil paint on gold leaf has a dramatic effect.  The appearance of the painting varies relative to the lighting in the room.  Indirect light brings the gold to the foreground and the painted imagery becomes silhouetted as if backlit, while indirect light the gold recedes, and the details of the figure emerge with more prominence, as if the light is inverting the painting as a whole.  The final effect is harmonious.
