"Creation and destruction, life and death - the drawings of José Gomes move in this field of tension. With clear reference to Brazilian nature and culture, his works on paper sometimes seem like collages that develop a strong pictorial depth. Gomes' research for his drawings also includes the study of drone images of the Brazilian primeval forests, which make it possible to understand exactly how these important habitats are being destroyed. These findings, as well as his study of Brazilian art history and craft, inform Gomes' intricate drawings, in which the figurative is often fractured by abstract elements, telling a story all its own."
