Lourenço de Castro helds a BA in Arquitecture (University Lusíada, Lisbon), and courses: in Painting and in Visual Arts (Ar.Co., Lisbon). In 2002, he obtained an Honorable Mention of the 7th Prize for Young Painters Fidelidade (Culturgest), and in 2014 was awarded with the “Arte Hoje” prize, by the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. He has held solo exhibitions since 2005, the year in which his work was presented in Galeria Monumental with a show that included painting, drawing and video. Lourenço de Castro’s work is mainly concerned with exploring the way in which images are constituted, and how during the proccess of its creation a cultural judgement, that evaluates and
ponderates, takes part.
Troll is his latest series, of which we bring two examples. Here, the chromatic freedom so characteristic of Lourenço de Castro’s oeuvre, creates a palimpsest that unveils a hiding game. Through overlapping and transparency, the artist’s gesture is confronted with the signs of popular heroes and villains that figure in children’s stories.
