Maccàri was born on November 24, 1898 into a family of the Sienese petty bourgeoisie. Since he was a child, extroverted and gifted with a lively visual intelligence, he is inclined towards free drawing with charcoal, but his father, a professor of literature, tries in every way to direct him towards humanistic studies. After completing his secondary education, he enrolled in university. An interventionist like many young people of his time, he took part at the age of nineteen as a field artillery officer in the Great War. At the end of the conflict he resumed his university studies in Siena and in 1920 he graduated in law; he starts working at the lawyer Dini's office in Colle Val d'Elsa, where the family originated from and where he spent his childhood with relatives; in his free time from work he dedicates himself to his true passion: painting.
