Silk Organza, Cotton, Cotton Fabric, Thread 12 × 24 in | 30.5 × 61 cm Edition of 1 Part of a limited edition set Includes a Certificate of Authenticity My piece, "Water and Fire," is based on the scene in Aristophanes' Lysistrata in which the female chorus extinguishes men's fire. I believe that water and fire represent the Phlegmatic and Choleric temperaments. Phlegmatic is calm and cautious, whereas Choleric is impatient and short-tempered. I think these are typical attributes of women's and men's temperaments. So many issues currently on the table divide us into different opinions. I wanted to depict the opposing forces abstractly. I used the needle lace technique for water, thinking about the color of the Aegean Sea and how sea water ripples. Fire is represented with ending knots. I was thinking about the strength of knots as an analogy for the boldness of Choleric temperament. But this method was used in Japan, where I grew up, during the world wars. The female made a sash or vest stitched with a thousand knots to wish the soldier a safe return. Each stitch was a prayer. As I stitched this piece, I did so with a deep-seated hope for a future that is marked by calm and compassionate resolutions.

Rima Day uses thread, fabric and paper to create artwork that is inspired by nature and the human body. Even though her background is fashion and costuming, she adapted her skill and knowledge in garment construction into a language to express herself through art. She studied fashion design both in her native city of Tokyo, Japan and later in New York City and worked as a freelance custom ballet costumer in New York City and Connecticut. While working at the costume shop in Vanderbilt University, she started making 18th century dresses with used jeans as a part of upcycling projects. They were exhibited in several galleries and she realized that it is possible for her to use her sewing skills to create art instead of costumes. She started exploring the possibilities. She is currently investigating the idea that needle and thread for her is the same as pen and ink for a writer. Her fabric books are in collection at the University of Iowa, Yale University, University of California, Princeton University, Southern Methodist University, other colleges and libraries and as well as several private collections. She lives near Nashville, TN.
