Oil on Arches paper 300gr

1985 Sobralinho, Portugal

Sérgio Fernandes’ work is based on a reflection on time. A time that lives in the tenuous, dark and unknown space between death and life. Your work exists in a void. It floats around conditions experienced or to be experienced of which there is no memory. His paintings suggest something that is beyond them, beyond the image, something that is not visible. Sérgio often says that: “deep down, my paintings are proof that I am empty and don’t have a single idea. I’m just an explorer.” Sérgio Fernandes’ main work focuses on oil on large canvases, often complemented with watercolor, drawing and sculpture. He was a resident artist at Centro de Arte Oliva (São João da Madeira, Portugal) in 2021 and 2022 and at PIVÔ Arte e Pesquisa (São Paulo, Brazil) in 2016. He has also participated in other residencies in recent years, including: Córtex Frontal (2020, Arraiolos, Portugal); Artistic Residencies Inter.Meada (2017, Alvito, Portugal) and Royal Blue nº224. Carris Museum (2014, Lisbon, Portugal).
