Walter Usai is a Sardinian ceramist from Assemini, continuing a family legacy of pottery that dates back to 1850, when his great-great-grandfather Efisio Usai began working as a “Strexiaiu”—a traditional crockery maker. The distinctive Assemini clay, rich in iron and minerals, is both beautiful and delicate, demanding exceptional skill from its artisans. Walter grew up immersed in this tradition, spending his childhood in his father’s workshop before establishing his own studio in 2002. Deeply rooted in heritage yet driven by innovation, he continually explores new techniques and modern interpretations of ancient forms, adapting them to contemporary life. His refined craftsmanship and openness to collaboration have led him to work with numerous brands and designers over the years.
