After spending her early life in Iran, immersed in a rich artistic culture, Fariba Baghi decided to move to Canada, in search of a more open country. During her youth, she witnessed the Iranian Islamic revolution, being exposed to a sudden overwhelming change in society and a major loss of freedom, specifically for women, who would be represented her favourite subject to depict.
Since she was educated in her native country, Iran has sincerely affected her perception towards art. At first, the richness and overabundance of her artistic tradition led her to an insatiable desire to create. However, on the other hand, her art is the snapshot of the human condition, where the subjects are ethereal human forms.
Her paintings mainly represent abstract women’s figure, realized through the search for a healthy balance between organic and earth tone colors, which allows the incorporation of variety and diversity to her creations. In fact, her creations evolve as different personal events impact her life. For this reason, her art is open to the change and it is adaptable to the use of the different mediums, techniques and methods. Baghi prefers to not be bond to a one medium or method of imagination, but to create artworks which are marked by the pursuit of openness.
The Canadian-Iranian contemporary artist prefers using traditional materials, as oils and acrylics, but also paste, cement and coffee, bringing a wide variety of textures and colors to her intriguing images. Her color’s palette is striking, because she is always aware of how color affects the viewer and employs that knowledge effectively.
Her quest for openness is represented by the broad selection of media she uses and by the subjects she depicts. The characters are women’s figure, whose forms are strictly connected to the delicate elements of nature. They are all represented undressed, standing on backgrounds marked by organic and earth tone colors. Sometimes, the figures seem to blend among themselves, because their shapes are blurred or decorated through little geometric squares. To distinguish the single women, Baghi marked them by the addition of colourful head of hair, using a burst of bright.
Fariba Baghi considers art as a genuine expression of the soul and she thinks that artistic expression comes into stages, which require different methods, techniques and styles to fully complete itself. At the center of her artistic manifesto, there are women, who became to be Baghi’s symbolic subjects since the Iranian Islamic revolution, when the artist witnessed a major loss of freedom from the female gender. Thanks to her art as a manifesto, her artworks have raised great success, being exhibited along the USA for the last 20 years.
