Building a boat is becoming very similar to building a house. The more the boat design evolves, the more the yacht interior design reassembles the one of a beautiful, comfortable house. Clients are now researching to build perfect, cozy places despite floating on water. Well-established interior design studios are working to respond to numeroud boat constructions sites demands and requests, with the aim to bring the "made in Italy" label on luxury boats as well. One of the first companies that merged interior design to yacht design was San Lorenzo in 2005, whilst Massimo Perotti was CEO of the company. The company started to build a dialogue between boat construction and furniture.
Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, reflects on the increasingly close relationship between luxury boats and design: "Yachts are an opoortunity that open to a world of wonders”. Today, the designer is facing the challenge to imagine and design this opportunity. Designing a boat means aerodynamics, style and safety. When thinking about sailing the first thing that comes to your mind are the conditions, therefore stability, different climates and materials. To this end, space planning and interior design plays a pivotal role in the creation of boats.
To plan the design of a boat, is like planning the design of a more technological house. The boat design is expanding, with the creation of a massive yacht, thus requiring the intervention of design studios able to design the perfect spaces. Ezequiel Farca, who has recently designed a yacht for the Benetti group, explained that during the 1990s and the first year of the 2000s, a proper revolution within the yacht design industry occurred, as the typical marine style of the boats changed into a more sophisticated contemporary interior design approach inspired by houses. This happened as architecture and design has increased its luxury market branches falling into an improved outsourcing of materials, quality and craftmanship.
Technology had a pivotal role in the development of luxury boats interiors as it supported security, too. According to Ezequiel Farca, what made the two worlds similar is the will to live on a boat the same way as living in a house space, with no worries, but with the same wellness, bringing on board the routines with no need of changing habits, but enjoying the life in the open air. An essential element that characterizes this new living floating houses is the use of a line with no time, simple and versatile, building livable spaces both inside and outside.
