Nestled in the hidden port of Poltu Quatu — literally “hidden harbour” — this small village, born in the late 1980s as a seaside refuge among rocks and waves, has been reborn with a bold new identity. Following a significant transformation led by Castello SGR, renowned for its investments in hospitality, and designed by the New York studio Meyer Davis, Poltu Quatu now shines with a unique blend of high-end hospitality, international cuisine, and contemporary lifestyle.

At the heart of this revival is W Sardinia – Poltu Quatu, a 154-room resort offering experiences that appeal to both travellers and locals alike. Within this dynamic context, Kooness was commissioned to shape the hotel’s artistic identity. From the overarching art concept to the curation, styling, and installation of every commissioned piece, our team crafted a cohesive visual language across public spaces and suites, connecting guests with Sardinia’s cultural heritage while enhancing the hotel’s contemporary, luxurious design.

Our approach began with a clear vision: to develop an art concept that celebrates Sardinia’s rich cultural heritage while complementing the hotel’s contemporary and vibrant design. Every artwork, material, and design element was carefully selected to tell a story of place and identity, creating a visual narrative that resonates throughout the resort. From the lobby to the most private suites, our aim was to craft an immersive experience that connects guests with the island’s artistic soul.

To bring this vision to life, we collaborated with both emerging Sardinian artists and artisans who have been practicing traditional techniques for generations. This dialogue between tradition and contemporary interpretation allowed us to showcase Sardinia’s craftsmanship in a modern context, resulting in a collection that feels authentic while perfectly aligned with a luxury environment. Each commissioned work, from sculptural pieces to wall installations, carries a strong sense of place while enhancing the hotel’s design language.

Signature elements, such as the commissioned two-meter-high W logo sculpture, anchor the visual narrative from the very first step guests take towards the entrance of the hotel. These work offer a sophisticated yet approachable introduction to both the hotel’s identity and Sardinia’s heritage. Every detail, from material choice to placement, was carefully considered to create a cohesive and welcoming experience.

From the lobby onwards, the hotel’s shared areas carry forward the themes established in the art concept, creating a continuous visual narrative. In the lobby, a custom wall piece serves as a striking centerpiece, immediately introducing visitors to Sardinia’s textures, colours, and artisanal heritage through contemporary forms. The intricate details of the work invite close inspection, offering a tactile and visual connection to the island while harmonising with the hotel’s modern design language.

The attention to detail continues throughout the reception area, where we also took care of the coffee table book selection, as well as the different vases bowls and accessories.

In the pool lounge, ceramic wall works extend this dialogue between heritage and modernity. These commissioned pieces bring the tactile quality of Sardinian artistry to one of the hotel’s most breathtaking spaces, coexisting with the surrounding landscape and the vibrant energy of the WET Deck. Together, these public artworks guide guests through an immersive experience, connecting each moment in the hotel to the island’s cultural identity.

In the suites, we extended the art narrative with a curated mix of commissioned works. Textile pieces, acrylic paintings, and carefully selected objects create a personal, immersive environment, allowing each guest to connect with Sardinia’s artistic identity. Each room was approached as a microcosm of the larger concept — a private gallery space that brings the island’s craftsmanship and contemporary creativity into intimate dialogue.

At the heart of this approach is the Presidential Suite, where art and design merge to form a deeply tactile and emotional experience. For this space, Kooness commissioned a large-scale textile work crafted with generational techniques rooted in Sardinia’s weaving tradition. The piece, designed exclusively for the suite, draws on local patterns and colours while embracing a contemporary aesthetic that complements Meyer Davis’s refined interior palette.

This textile installation acts as both an artwork and a sensory anchor — an embodiment of place, memory, and craftsmanship. The subtle irregularities of handwoven threads tell the story of time-honoured processes, while the modern composition situates the piece firmly within the hotel’s forward-looking design language.

Across all guest rooms, we introduced sculptural elements and bespoke decorative pieces that further humanise the contemporary interiors. These works, ranging from hand-shaped ceramics to small bronze forms, were chosen not merely as accents but as expressions of Sardinian material culture. Each object reflects a dialogue between natural textures and modern minimalism, fostering a sense of serenity and connection to the landscape beyond the windows.

Through these artistic interventions, the guest rooms transcend traditional hospitality design to become intimate cultural spaces — environments where authenticity and luxury coexist. Every element, from the woven wall pieces to the curated library selections, reinforces the feeling of being enveloped by Sardinia’s artistic spirit, reimagined for a new generation of travellers.
